Artist: Fabian Musto | Inspiration: Grayson Perry | "The Vanity of Small Differences"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Monday 26th July, I began work on a tapestry that took inspirations from the work of Grayson Perry, one of England's leading artists in the twenty-first century. I adapted the style of his work onto a new A3 sketchbook I received in June 2021, and on Monday 14th June, I made a mindmap that took a further look into Perry's work, as well as ideas for my custom tapestry (mindmap seen below).

It was tricky for me to chose one of the three concepts for my custom tapestry; I thought of making tapestries on the evolution of my YouTube career, my architecture on Marcleston (custom settlement on Roblox) or the evolution of my custom logos (featuring custom companies). The last two options were also going to feature works by my older brother Dylan, who has been my main inspiration for a long time. After a few weeks, I decided to stick to the idea of making a tapestry of my custom architecture on Marcleston, Mustoland, which I began working on in the final days of July 2021; this was a lot of fun for me!

26th July: The first building I drew was Musto House, which was the first building I built in my custom settlement

27th July: I drew the Vicarage next to Musto House, and the church tower of St. Peter behind the two houses. I later drew the clock tower, with the music hall adjacent. Lastly, I drew the ginormous proportions of the /OMEGA HQs and Metropole Hotel, which formed the background of the piece.

28th July: I filled in the background of the tapestry, which features several colourful diamonds, filled in by many markers!

The background took many hours to fill in, along with outlining the diagonal lines with 0.5mm fine liners. After I finished working on the background, I gave the lines of the buildings great depth, since I wanted to give the viewer an impression that the buildings are the focal point of the tapestry, not the background. Around 5:20pm, I completed the tapestry as a whole! I was pleased with the finished result, and still am now. REFERENCES:

  1. Musto House (built 21st June 2020, completed 22:59 / 10:59pm)

  2. The Vicarage (built 24th June 2020)

  3. St. Peter's church (built 23rd June 2020)

  4. The clock tower (built 15th July 2020)

  5. Music hall (built 18th June 2021)

  6. St. Michael and All Angels parish church (built 19th-21st December 2020, 24th August 2021)

  7. /OMEGA headquarters (built early February 2021)

  8. The Metropole Hotel (built mid July 2021)

WRITE-UP: "From 26th-29th July, I worked on my tapestry that spanned two pages in my new A3 sketchbook. Based on the artwork of Grayson Perry, I adapted his wide range of colours set behind eight buildings; these were built by me in my custom settlement “Marcleston” from the past fifteen months. From the small church tower of St. Peter to the expansive proportions of the Metropole Hotel, this showcases my personal favourites that have been infilled by markers and outlined by 0.5mm fine liners; this was done to bring the viewers’ attention to the focal subjects."

TRIVIA: This was the first double-page drawing I made since September 2018. -On 29th July 2021, I completed the tapestry at 5:20pm, and I took a photograph of it (seen at the top page). At 5:22pm, my third cat Harmonie appeared behind the drawing! Unfortunately, she passed away three days after due to her ailing health from cancer. CONCLUSION: This is one of three complete drawings I have made this year (2021), and this may be my favourite! This is viewed as an experimental drawing by me too, since I coloured the lower stage of the clock tower with a yellow marker, while the upper stage was infilled with a yellow colouring pencil. The combination of colouring pencils and markers are a neat touch too, hence why I find this experimental; this style may be adapted into future works of mine.

This tapestry might be followed by another tapestry of my custom architecture in Marcleston!
